Nikon packs a wealth of features in its latest and smallest D-SLR

Nikon D40

The Nikon D40 is Nikon's most compact and most affordable D-SLR to date. This camera combines a host of high-end features with an easy-to-navigate layout to make the creation of quality photographs easier and fun. Its straightforward layout and design, combined with the D40's compact size, make it an excellent entry-level D-SLR.

In-Camera Image Editing provides photographers with the capability to enhance their images even before they're imported into a computer. D-Lighting, Image Trimming and Image Overlay are a few of the changes that can be applied to your photographs in-camera.

Supporting both NEF (RAW) and JPEG file formats, the camera gives photographers the versatility to vary the level of control they have over their images.

Eight Digital Vari-Program Modes make taking portraits, landscapes or action shots easier without having to navigate a host of controls or menus.

The 6.1-megapixel camera provides an affordable step up for photographers who have been shooting with compact digital cameras. Sold with the 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6G Nikkor lens, it delivers a complete D-SLR system.

The camera is as fast as it is small, with a start-up time of just 0.18 seconds. For capturing sports and fast action, the D40 delivers up to a 2.5 fps continuous-firing rate.

Learning to maximize your digital camera doesn't have to depend on negotiating a thick manual. The D40 offers an Advanced Help Menu, which includes 40 Assist Images—visual examples of the various types of photographs you can create with the camera.

Reviewing images and negotiating the menu screen is made all the easier by the D40's 2.5-inch color LCD. Capable of 19x magnification in the image preview mode, the screen features easy-to-view menus and large fonts for easy reading.

Featuring Nikon's advanced 3D Color Matrix II metering system, the D40 also includes center-weighted and spot metering, providing the versatility to produce accurate exposures under virtually any lighting condition.

Weighing just 17 ounces, the D40 is Nikon's smallest D-SLR. It measures just 5.0x2.5x3.7 inches and is ideal for those who prefer a compact camera that utilizes interchangeable lenses.
