Canon EOS-1D Mark III
First Look: Canon EOS-1D Mark III
The world’s fastest D-SLR gets a lot faster, live viewing, sensor cleaning and more!Canon's EOS-1D Mark II has reigned as the D-SLR speed king for more than a year, able to shoot its 8.2-megapixel images at an amazing 8.5 per second. Now Canon has blown that out of the water with the Mark II's successor. The new EOS-1D Mark III's ability to shoot 10.1-megapixel images at 10 per second is just one of its remarkable talents.
The Mark III's 3.0-inch LCD monitor provides Live View capability: When you so desire, you can focus and compose using the LCD (especially handy in dim light and to check depth of field) or send the image to a computer via USB 2.0 Hi-Speed cable or wirelessly (with the optional new Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2A) for studio applications.
The new AF system can keep up with the 10 fps shooting rate and is twice as sensitive as the Mark II's, operating down to EV -1. There are still 45 AF points, but selecting them is easier, and 19 are now high-precision cross-types (vs. seven for the Mark II).
The newly upgraded shutter is rated for 300,000 cycles, up from 200,000. It also generates less dust, another element of the EOS Integrated Cleaning System.
A new rechargeable lithium-ion battery nearly doubles shooting capacity (to 2,200 shots from 1,200). And with battery, the Mark III is a significant 7.9 ounces lighter than the Mark II.
While the new Canon-produced 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor raises resolution some 23% over that of the Mark II N, its APS-H size also means bigger pixels than 10-megapixel APS-C sensors for better low-light and high-ISO performance. ISOs now go up to 6400.
